Summary of a good year for design :)

I have finished my first year of a design degree at Stockport college.

Most of this blog has been updated with uni work related posts and a few off topic posts.

This year im hoping to absolutely saturate this blog with Uni work, design that interests me and work i have created!!!

And to get the ball rolling here is a website design i recently created for a mobile DJ.

LULU.com is ass backwards!!!

heres my rant of the day!

One of the things i've learnt about design is that the most time consuming and annoying part of the design process is dealing with the print companies and printers.

after creating a magazine and dealing with the non existant support lulu has to find there print settings it was up to lulu too print the magazine... expecting it back from lulu as a professionally printed high quality magazine i was extremely disappointed when it came back, the valleys between pages had been cropped to an extreme and the ink it was printed in was blotchy and faded.

DO NOT use lulu to create design on photo books... they are truly publishers for text books only despite them pimping themselves out as full colour publishers.

Lesson Learnt, dont use LULU!!!

Environmental Opportunities

i took photos of urban environments and applied ways these environments could be used to advertise products and companies.

Insurance Company - The life ring could have an insurance company logo on it, as a life ring is a safety device that is used only when someone is danger similar to why insurance is used.

Stop Smoking - The white light cover could have an orange sticker placed on one side to make the light look like a cigarette, a slogan such as “Cigarettes are everywhere when your trying to quit” could be applied.

Waterside Safety - A set of arms could be placed holding onto the ladder or one hand holding a sign warning people of the dangers of swimming in reservoirs, canals and quays.
(this could be used on a buoy to make a floating arm holding a sign)

Staple Gun - This bike rack like most bike racks looks like a big staple gun staple. A message on the floor sporting a tagline such as “ Staples anything “ could be applied.

Pop up (Quickpitch) tent - A sticker of tents could be placed onto the motorized bollards so that when they pop up the tent does too.

Shepard Fairey and the OBEY GIANT

Shepard Fairey is a graphic designer, Illustrator and street artist who is the father of the "André the Giant Has a Posse" campaign and following.

Fairey plays with a thing called phenomenology, which in its simplest form is using a device that attracts your attention to something you wouldn't often notice in the environment, therefore reawakening your senses.

For example if you saw a poster of André stuck high up on a bridge would it catch your eye more than just the bridge, and if you saw the same poster elsewhere would you question why it is there not trying to sell you anything?

Shepard Fairey is also now more widely known for his design work for the Obama election posters!

Graffiti using its environement - Banksy

Banksy is now dare I say it the most famous graffiti artist to date. His ethos on Graffiti and street art is completely radical, he creates art that makes you use you think and look at places you would never usually look in your everyday environment.

“I still paint graffiti because I genuinely think the side of a canal is a more interesting place to have art than a museum,” - Banksy recently quoted in times magazine after being questioned why he still paints in obscure usually unseen places.

This idea of drawing peoples attention to walls and objects usually unseen in everyday life links in with Shepard Faireys OBEY campaign and Phenomenology.

Banksy puts the environment where his street art is to full use in his work often including such items as drain pipes and cracks in walls. Here are some examples!

Daniel Eatock - Thankyou Pictures

Daniel Eatock's work and witty shenanigans make you scream "I WISH I HAD THOUGHT OF THAT!". His work usually consists of everyday items, sights and coincidences that go completely unnoticed. Thankyou Photographs are a perfect example of Eatock's way of thinking!
